The Stray includes over 200 acres of resplendent lawns used for sport, picnics, special events or just a stroll. In spring the crocuses and daffodils come into bloom, and many of the trees are illuminated on an evening.

Also on the Stray lies the 'Tewit Well', reputedly discovered in 1571 by William Slingsby.
This 200 acres of land wraps around the main urban "old town" and is fiercely guarded by residents with a group set up specifically to safeguard it. The Stray exists for the people of the town and is a popular spot for picnicking, kite-flying, outdoor games and local football matches. This area of grassland surrounds the town and therefore refreshments and toilets, including disabled toilets, are never far away. Please note that parking is not allowed on the grassland. On-street disc zone car parking is available around the town centre and surrounding most areas of the Stray. The Stray is open land and is therefore open all year, 24 hours a day. Disabled access Pathways suitable for wheelchairs run across all major sections of the Stray.
